Best Time for a Campervan Trip in Australia

With the reverse seasons of the northern hemisphere, Australia enjoys a largely temperate climate, so the best time of the year for your Australia campervan hire trip depends on which part of the country you are travelling to.

Winter - temperatures are at their lowest in July across the country.

Summer - The warmest months are January or February in the south and December in the north, except in the extreme north and north-west where it is warmest in November.

North Australia - The northern section of Australia has a tropical climate, hot and humid in the summer so travelling by campervan at this time could be uncomfortable. North Australia is hot and dry in the winter.

South Australia - This part is generally more temperate to warm (with some colder pockets). For example, the maximum summer temperature in Sydney or Melbourne is around 79-86F (26-30C), and in the winter it is around 56-61F (13-16C).

Before Arriving in Australia

Customs - Strict laws prohibit or restrict the entry of drugs, steroids, weapons, firearms, protected wildlife and associated products. If you are unsure about anything declare it to Customs upon arrival.

Quarantine - Quarantine Australia has strict quarantine regulations. Australia is free from many pests and diseases found elsewhere in the world. It's vital that you declare any food, plant or animal items upon arrival, including fresh and packaged food, fruit, eggs, meat, vegetables, seeds, animals, wood and plants. You can dispose of these items at bins found in international airports.

Vaccinations - Vaccinations are not required unless you have come from, or visited a yellow fever infected country or zone within six days before arrival. No other health certificate is required to enter Australia.

Time Zones There are three time zones in Australia: Eastern Standard Time (EST), which includes New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory; Central Standard Time (CST), which includes South Australia and the Northern Territory; and Western Standard Time (WST) - Western Australia. CST is one half hour behind EST, while WST is two hours behind EST.

Airports - Australia has ten international gateways served by major international airlines as well as Qantas, Australia's national carrier.
